Prepping your Appliances for your Time Away

When life occasionally takes you away from your home for an extended period of time or you are closing down a vacation home for the season, it's important not to forget about your appliances. Properly preparing your washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, microwave, and ice maker can prevent issues and ensure they function smoothly when you return. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you out:

1. Washer and Dryer:

  • Clean the lint traps and filters to prevent blockages.

  • Run a cleaning cycle with a cleaning tablet to prevent mold growth.

  • Leave the washer door open to allow air circulation and prevent odors.

  • Turn off the water to the unit.

  • Unplug both appliances to save energy and prevent potential hazards.

2. Refrigerator:

  • Clear out all perishables and dispose of items that might expire.

  • Clean the interior, shelves, and drawers.

  • If you will be gone less than 6 months, you can leave it running.

  • If you plan to be gone longer than 6 months you should turn the unit off. In that case, remove all food items, unplug the refrigerator, empty and defrost the freezer, and leave the doors slightly open to prevent mold.

3. Dishwasher:

  • Run a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner to prevent buildup.

  • Clean the filters and remove any food particles.

  • Turn off the water to the unit.

  • Leave the dishwasher door ajar to avoid moisture accumulation.

4. Stove:

  • Give your stove a thorough cleaning, including burner grates and oven interiors.

  • Turn off the gas supply, if applicable, for safety reasons.

5. Microwave:

  • Clean the interior and exterior of the microwave.

  • Unplug the microwave and leave door slightly open to prevent odors.

6. Ice Maker:

  • Turn off the ice maker to conserve energy and prevent ice from melting and refreezing.

  • Turn off the water to the unit.

  • Empty and clean the ice bin.

By investing some time into preparing your appliances before your time away, you'll be setting yourself up for a smooth return home. Taking these steps will not only help extend the life of your appliances but also save you from potential headaches caused by malfunctioning equipment while you are away. Remember to consult your appliance manuals for any manufacturer-specific recommendations. With a little effort, you can enjoy your time away without worrying about the state of your appliances.
